PE and Sports

With the continuing support of government initiatives and the extra Sport Premium funding this year, staff at Bengeworth CE Academy deliver the PE curriculum utilising the knowledge of staff alongside the use of the scheme, REAL PE by Creative Development.  A vast array of physical and sporting activities aims to ensure that every child in school has the opportunity to enjoy their physical development as well as celebrate sporting success alongside the school's values.

Throughout the year, we work closely with local schools, the School Games Organiser and the wider community to ensure all children at Bengeworth CE Academy receive outstanding opportunities both in and out of school.

Extra Curricular Opportunities - Curriculum+

At Bengeworth, all children from Reception to Year 5 are offered opportunities to participate in sporting clubs throughout the school year, working closely with a variety of external providers as well as drawing on the expertise of our own staff.   We see these clubs as an extension to the curriculum which is why we call them 'Curriculum+' and include sporting activities such as football, archery, rounders, cricket, quidditch, boccia and kurling, to name a few.

PE Lessons

During PE lessons, teachers access learning material aimed at developing children through a multi-ability approach with focus on personal, social, physical, health & fitness, creative and cognitive skills. These important aspects of physical development are targeted through fun and engaging activities which ensure that all children are able to enjoy and succeed in PE at school.  Children are provided with regular opportunities to self-reflect on their learning and development which lead to an increased understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement.  This provides children with ownership of their learning experience and a tool for developing self-reflection and target setting.

Alongside Real PE, sport lessons continue to develop children's enjoyment of being active and give children opportunities to be creative and imaginative in physical activity.  They learn new skills, explore how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions, phrases and sequences of movement. Children enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other, developing an understanding of how to succeed in different activities, learning how to evaluate and recognise their own success and to apply their work in Real PE lessons to other areas of the curriculum.

Gymnastics

The children work hard to create individual, paired and group sequences and learn how to incorporate travel, shapes, rolls and balances on and off apparatus.  All children perform their sequences to music and take time to observe and analyse other performances.  Due to the high level of teaching, many children are signposted into local clubs and take part in gymnastics' festivals and events throughout the year.

Games

In Key Stage 1, children develop the fundamentals of movement which include agility, balance and coordination.  In Key Stage 2, the children are offered a multi-skills approach until they are ready to specialise.

Football, tag rugby, hockey, netball and basketball are all taught throughout the year, as well as inclusive sports such as archery, boccia and kurling.  In the summer months, children are taught the skills of cricket, rounders, tennis, softball and athletics.  All children are provided with the opportunity to take part in intra-school competitions where they can compete against each other and earn house points for their respective houses.

Dance

In Dance, children create, choreograph and perform individual, paired and small group dances based on their topics.  They reflect on actions, dynamics, space and relationships in every lesson and can apply them confidently.  Many children enjoy attending Dance Club at both settings which runs throughout the year.  Some children are signposted to local clubs where they take part in competitions and local events around the County.

Outdoor and Adventurous Pursuits

In Outdoor and Adventurous activities, children develop their teamwork skills and work together to solve problems.  They follow trails around the school grounds, learn how to map-read, scavenge for treasure and even lead others across crocodile infested swamps!  Children build confidence in one another using communication and leadership skills, drawing on the skills they learn during their fortnightly Pupil Leadership sessions which they then apply to other aspects of the school curriculum.

Swimming

Children in Reception (5 weeks) and Year 5 (10 weeks) attend swimming lessons at Evesham Leisure Centre whilst children in Years 1 to 4 participate in swimming lessons in a two-week intensive course at our King’s Road setting using a purpose built on-site pool.  All children take part in programmes designed to develop their confidence in the water through our own Bengeworth Barracuda Awards scheme and achieve the National Curriculum standard of being able to swim 25 metres on their front and back.  All children work towards achieving a range of nationally recognised swimming awards, with some children going on to represent Bengeworth Academy in the local swimming gala where they compete against swimmers from our local cluster schools.

More Able Provision

The Physical Education Curriculum promotes high achievement and good progress.  Where pupils are identified as ‘More Able’, specific tasks are set which use a wider range of context and resources for learning and set a higher level of attainment.

Playground Leaders' Programme

The Playground Leaders' scheme supports staff in the playground with trained Year 5 leaders supporting  multi-skills activities to groups of younger children.  The scheme encourages young people to take responsibility, develop communication skills and encourage confidence.  It promotes integration and social inclusion, it encourages cooperation and develops moral and social skills.
